Lets Celebrate
On the first Sunday of the month
(10am.) This is a non Eucharist service for those who want modern music,
modern hymns and modern prayers, held in St Nicholas Church. We get around
180 to 230 people of all ages at this event. Come early we often do not
have enough seats for all.
Eucharist
We hold traditional Sung Eucharist
also known ‘The Lord’s Supper’ using the words from the ‘ Common Worship
Book (Order One )’. These services are held on all the other Sundays, at
10.am in St. Marys Church, except on the 3rd Sunday when it is held in
St. Nicholas Church.
During these 10 o'clock services
a Junior Church session is run, though the children begin and end the service
with the whole congregation.
Evensong / Mattins
The words of Evensong and Mattins
have been handed down from the time of King Henry the Eight (1660 book
of common prayer with some minor revisions). We have a Choir at both these
services singing the Hymns Canticals and Psalms. Evensong takes place on
the 3rd. Sunday of the month 6.0pm, and Mattins on the 1st Sunday of the
month 11.30am. Both in St. Mary's Church.
Eucharist / Holy Communion
The 8.0am Eucharist service is a said (no hymns or chants ) version from Common Worship for those who want to start Sunday with a simple service. On 1st. and 3rd. Sunday in the month, this service takes place in St. Marys. On the 2nd. 4th. and 5th. Sundays this service is held in St, Nicholas. We also celebrate this service on Wednesdays at 10am. as a mid week service, in St. Marys. Church.
Communion for the housebound
Last but not least, if you are a Member of Lavant Parish Church or live in the parish and are not able to get to Church due to illness or are housebound for some other reason, we can share communion with you, in you own home. We are only as far as a phone call away, Ring the Rector (527313) leave a message on his answer phone, or E-mail me and we will arrange for a member of our visitors team to contact you and bring communion to you in your home.
In Praise of Evensong
My favourite service is Evensong
as it brings back memories of my Youth when I had reached a stage of attending
church because I wished to, as opposed to being pressurised to attend either
Sunday School or Mattins which is why the latter is my least favourite
service.
Casting back so many years, I think
my desire to attend Evensong was fuelled by my unrequited love for the
head choirboy whom I glanced at through my fingers during the prayers.
He was one of the reasons I became confirmed and I often think that God
moves in mysterious ways to draw us along the path of faith.
In those far off days, 50 years ago, Evensong was extremely well attended, there being few distractions or entertainments available. I find it very sad today that the choir often outnumbers the congregation even though the service is only once a month. Things changed during the few years when I drifted away from the church and only attended sporadically. When I returned with young children of Sunday School age I discovered that the Eucharist was now the main Sunday service and since then Mattins and Evensong have steadily declined.
The lovely words of the Magnificat and the Nunc Dimittis wash over me and I feel that I am a teenager again back in another St Mary’s church, this time in Hampden Park, just outside Eastbourne. The old familiar words of the service return so easily to the mind which is more than can be said for much of the newer services. On a lovely summer's evening it is just perfect to stand outside the West door. and look across the well kept churchyard to the hills beyond. Even in winter the lighted windows welcome those approaching, promising refuge and an uplifting of the spirit. There is also the knowledge that David's sermon will be as brilliant as ever despite being preached to a handful of people.
So come and join us!
